KDP Categories and BISAC Codes Explained

What BISAC codes are, how they relate to Amazon’s category system, when the old system changed, and what still matters about BISAC for authors distributing beyond Amazon.

9-minute read Beginner

If you published on KDP before mid-2023, or if you use a distribution service like IngramSpark alongside KDP, you will encounter BISAC codes — a publishing industry standard that used to be directly embedded in KDP’s publishing process. Understanding how the two systems relate clarifies your metadata strategy across all distribution channels. For the full category strategy, see our complete guide to Amazon KDP categories.

What BISAC Codes Are

BISAC stands for Book Industry Standards and Communications. BISAC codes are a standardised classification system maintained by the Book Industry Study Group — a US trade association — used consistently across all major book retailers, distributors, and libraries. A BISAC code like FIC022020 (Fiction / Mystery & Detective / Cosy) means the same thing at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ingram, and your local library system. They provide a common language for book classification across the entire industry.

The Old BISAC System in KDP

Before mid-2023, when you published on KDP you selected two BISAC codes from a dropdown menu. Amazon then translated those codes into its own internal browse categories — a process that was frequently imprecise and left authors guessing at how Amazon would interpret their selections. After publication, authors could email KDP support to request up to ten additional Amazon browse category placements on top of those two BISAC-derived placements.

Both elements of that system are now gone. The two-BISAC selection has been replaced by direct Amazon store category selection, and the KDP support request pathway for additional categories no longer exists.

The New Amazon Store Category System

Since mid-2023, KDP’s category interface shows Amazon’s own store categories directly — the same categories readers browse on Amazon. You select up to three of these during the Details step of publishing. What you select is what you get: no more translation, no more guessing how Amazon will interpret a BISAC code. The three-category limit is firm, and it applies per format (ebook, paperback, and hardcover each get three independent slots).

The practical advantage: you can verify every category before selecting it by checking whether it has a live, real bestseller list on Amazon’s store. The old BISAC system gave you no such verification — you selected a code and hoped the translation would land in the right place.

When BISAC Codes Still Matter

For Kindle ebook publishing exclusively through KDP, BISAC codes are now almost entirely a background concern — Amazon derives them automatically from your category selection and they have no direct impact on your Amazon discoverability. You do not need to think about BISAC codes at all when selecting your three KDP categories.

BISAC codes become relevant again when you distribute your print book through IngramSpark or other wholesale distribution channels, where they are used to catalogue and shelve your book in the wider book trade — independent bookshops, library systems, non-Amazon online retailers. If you are distributing widely, choosing the most specific and accurate BISAC code for your book (which Amazon derives from your specific category selection) ensures correct classification in those channels.

How Amazon Derives BISAC From Your Selection

When you choose an Amazon store category, Amazon automatically maps it to the closest matching BISAC code for use in industry-standard metadata. The more specific your Amazon category selection, the more specific the BISAC mapping — which is one more reason to always choose the deepest, most specific applicable subcategory rather than a broad parent.
