The specific signals that mean a category change is needed — and the situations where leaving your current categories alone is the right decision. Plus the process for updating, and how to time changes to minimise disruption.

Category strategy does not end at publication. Amazon creates new subcategories, competitive landscapes shift, and your own performance data reveals whether your current placements are working. Knowing when to update — and when to leave well alone — is as important as the initial selection. For the full category foundation, see our complete guide to Amazon KDP categories.
When Not to Update
Leave your categories unchanged when: your book is ranking in the top 20 of its chosen categories; you have earned or are close to earning a bestseller badge; your sales are stable or growing; no new more relevant categories have been created; and Amazon has not moved you to different categories. Category changes on a well-performing book introduce risk — a 24–72 hour re-indexing delay that temporarily reduces your category ranking — without clear upside.
Signals That Warrant an Update
Consider updating your categories when: you discover that any of your current selections is a ghost category or a duplicate; Amazon has moved you to categories you did not choose; your book is not appearing in the top 50 of its chosen categories after six or more weeks; new subcategories have been created that describe your book more specifically than your current selections; or your advertising data shows strong conversion in searches associated with a different category than your current placements.
When New Subcategories Appear
Amazon periodically creates new subcategories as reader search behaviour evolves and genres develop. Recent additions have included cosy fantasy, romantasy, and various new thriller and romance subcategories. New categories often start with lower competition than established ones — because they are new and fewer books are specifically placed there yet. Regular category audits (annually is a practical minimum) catch these opportunities before the window of lower competition closes.
How to spot new categories: browse your genre hierarchy periodically on Amazon’s live store and compare what you see with your book’s current placements. New subcategories appear in the hierarchy before most authors become aware of them, creating a window where early placement provides an advantage.
The Update Process
Category updates are made through the KDP Bookshelf: ellipsis (…) next to your title → Edit details → Details tab → Categories. You can remove any of your three current selections and replace them with new ones. Changes take 24–72 hours to appear on your product page. There is no limit on how frequently you can change categories.
After updating, always check your product page 72 hours later to confirm the new categories have appeared and that Amazon has not moved you again. Also update any category-anchoring keyword fields to match your new category selections.
Timing Category Updates
Avoid updating categories immediately before a promotional period — the re-indexing delay could reduce your category ranking during your most valuable traffic window. Plan updates at least one week before any promotion. Also avoid changing categories and keywords simultaneously if possible — changing one variable at a time makes it easier to assess what is working and what is causing any performance changes.
A Practical Review Cadence
| Timing | Action |
|---|---|
| 72 hours post-publication | Check product page — confirm you appear in your chosen categories, not Amazon-reassigned ones |
| 6 weeks post-publication | First ranking check — are you in the top 50 of each category? Top 20? |
| 3–6 months post-publication | First substantive review — assess performance, check for new subcategories, consider changes |
| Annually | Full category audit — repeat the research process, update based on current landscape |
