Research Checklist
- Browsed the Amazon live category hierarchy (not just the KDP interface) at least 3 levels deep for your genre/subject
- Identified at least 8–12 candidate categories across all relevant hierarchies
- Checked how comparable bestselling books are categorised (Product Details section on their pages)
- Noted the full category path string for each candidate
Verification Checklist
- Every candidate category verified on Amazon’s live store — confirmed to have a real, scrollable, numbered bestseller list
- All ghost categories (no real bestseller list) removed from candidate list
- All duplicate category paths (different strings leading to the same underlying list) identified and reduced to one selection per unique underlying list
Selection Checklist
- BSR of current #1 and #10 checked for each remaining candidate category
- Daily sales estimate derived from BSR using the BSR Sales Estimator
- Review counts for top 3 books noted for each candidate
- Publisher breakdown (traditional vs indie) assessed for each candidate
- Three categories selected — each the deepest applicable subcategory
- Three selections spread across different hierarchy branches (not all in the same tree)
- All three selections accurately describe your book
- Ebook and paperback categories planned independently (if both formats published)
Keyword Anchoring Checklist
- 1–2 backend keyword fields set with phrases specifically associated with your chosen categories
- Category-anchoring keywords do not repeat terms already in your title or subtitle
- Remaining keyword fields used for search phrase expansion beyond category terms
Post-Publication Checklist
- Product page checked 72 hours after publication — book appears in chosen categories
- Amazon has not moved the book to different categories
- Book appears on the Hot New Releases list for each category (during the ~30 day window)
- If Amazon has moved the book: categories updated and keyword anchoring reviewed
