Bush Bloopers<\/h3>\n

“There\u2019s an old saying in Tennessee \u2014 I know it\u2019s in Texas, probably in Tennessee \u2014 that says, fool me once, shame on \u2014 shame on you. Fool me \u2014 you can\u2019t get fooled again.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– President Bush was referring to the well-known English idiom (which is certainly not just limited to Texas or Tennessee), \u201cFool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.\u201d The phrase means that you should learn from your mistakes. If you allow people to take advantage of you repeatedly then it is your own fault.<\/p>\n

I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe \u2014 I believe what I believe is right.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– This is one of those Bush bloopers that is very confusing: we really are not sure what he is talking about here!<\/p>\n

“Tribal sovereignty means that; it\u2019s sovereign. I mean, you\u2019re a \u2014 you\u2019ve been given sovereignty, and you\u2019re viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

-This Bush blooper reveals that the President clearly didn\u2019t quite know what tribal sovereignty was. Tribal sovereignty actually refers to the right of indigenous American tribes to rule and govern themselves.<\/p>\n

“The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation\u2019s history. I mean in this century\u2019s history. But we all lived in this century. I didn\u2019t live in this century.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– Again, this is one of those Bush bloopers that really is incomprehensible!<\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve been in the Bible every day since I\u2019ve been the president.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– This is one of our favorite Bush bloopers. Perhaps this should have said, \u201cI have read the bible every day since I became president.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis thaw \u2013 took a while to thaw, it\u2019s going to take a while to unthaw\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– How can something unthaw?<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAnd they have no disregard for human life\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– This should have said, \u201cregard for human life.\u201d The use of the word \u201cno\u201d with \u201cdisregard\u201d forms a double negative.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– There are abductions taking place in the Oval Office right under President Bush’s nose? The sentence is structured incorrectly here. The president should have said, \u201cI remember meeting, right here in the Oval Office, a mother of a child who was abducted by North Koreans.\u201d<\/p>\n
