Are they actually different from one another and does the term \u201csome one\u201d actually exist?<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we take a look at these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vappingo.com\/word-blog\/common-english-errors\/\">commonly confused words <\/a>and reveal that, despite what many people say, there is such a term as \u201csome one.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Someone or some one?<\/h2>\n<h3>Someone<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u201d refers to an unspecified group of people. It should be used when you want to refer to a person, but you do not have a preference to whom you refer: Will someone answer the phone, please?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Someone has taken my lunch out of the fridge.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There must be someone who is able to help me.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I\u2019m sure someone, somewhere, will marry me.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Some one<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSome one\u201d refers to an unspecified member of a group of items or a person that is being selected for individual attention:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I know that <strong>some one<\/strong>\u00a0in my team has stolen my lunch but I don\u2019t know who.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Quite often when using \u201csome one\u201d the word \u201csome\u201d can be removed without causing a loss of clarity:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I know that<strong> one<\/strong> of the members of my team has stolen my lunch but I don\u2019t know who.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The use of \u201csome one\u201d in written English is very, very rare and so, as such, the majority of the time that you see the use of \u201csome one\u201d instead of \u201csomeone,\u201d it has probably been used in error, the writer probably meant \u201csomeone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, there are valid cases for the use of \u201csome one.\u201d In Jane Austin\u2019s Pride and Prejudice, for example, you find the paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood (sic), this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of <strong>some one<\/strong> or other of their daughters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here she means, \u201csome one or other\u201d of the daughters. The author is saying that one of the daughters is being selected for special attention; we just don\u2019t know which one.<\/p>\n<p>Someone or some one?
