It carries the weight of genre signaling, quality perception, and click-through motivation in a thumbnail roughly the size of a postage stamp. None of that persuasive power matters if the file you submit doesn’t meet KDP’s technical requirements. A cover with incorrect dimensions, too-low resolution, or the wrong file format will be rejected by KDP, and a cover with subtly incorrect specifications: too small, slightly the wrong ratio: will look soft or cropped on the product page. This guide covers every technical requirement for both ebook and print covers, so the design you or your designer creates translates perfectly into the published product.

Use this technical guide alongside the cover design and genre-signals guide, paperback formatting guide, and hardcover formatting guide. Finish the interior before finalizing the print wrap.

Kindle Ebook Cover Requirements

KDP’s current recommended Kindle marketing cover is 2560 pixels high by 1600 pixels wide, a 1.6:1 height-to-width ratio. JPEG is the preferred format, RGB is appropriate for screen display, and the image should be sharp at the intended size. KDP also publishes minimum dimensions, but the recommended size is a better production target for new artwork.

Keep pricing, temporary promotional language, retailer claims, and other transient sales messages off the cover. The cover shown in KDP should also match the book readers receive and the title/author metadata entered during setup.

Print Covers Are One Full-Wrap PDF

A print cover file contains back cover, spine, and front cover as one PDF sized to the exact trim, page count, paper, and bleed configuration of that edition. Finalize the interior first because the page count controls spine width. Download a fresh KDP cover template after the pagination is locked rather than recycling dimensions from an earlier draft.

For print, KDP guidance calls for 300 DPI images and print-appropriate color handling. Embed fonts, flatten transparency/layers as needed, avoid spot colors, and do not mix incompatible color spaces. Check a physical proof because screen appearance is not a reliable prediction of every printed color.

Bleed, Safe Areas, and Trim

Print cover backgrounds and images that reach the edge should extend 0.125 inch beyond the trim at the top, bottom, and outside edges of the full wrap. Keep essential text and design elements safely inside the trim. KDP’s current cover guidance requires front/back content to stay at least 0.125 inch inside the trim, and spine text needs clearance from the fold lines.

Use the template rather than hand-calculating panel positions. A few millimeters can determine whether a border looks centered or whether text drifts into a fold after manufacturing tolerances are applied.

Spine Width and Spine Text

Spine width depends on the final page count, paper, and print configuration. For paperbacks, KDP requires at least 79 pages before spine text can be used. Technical eligibility is not the same as legibility: a narrow spine may still be too small for a long title to look good.

Keep spine text at least 0.0625 inch from each side of the spine fold area and use the current template for the exact edition. If the interior changes enough to alter page count, regenerate the template and reposition the entire wrap before upload.

Barcode Area and Back Cover

If you do not supply your own acceptable barcode, KDP can place one on the print cover. KDP suggests a barcode area around 2 × 1.2 inches and publishes minimum dimensions and clearance requirements. Do not place critical text or artwork where an automatic barcode is expected.

Treat the back cover as reader-facing copy rather than leftover space. The blurb, endorsements, author information, imprint details, and any permitted website copy should be concise and proofread. Make sure the metadata agrees with what appears on the cover.

RGB and CMYK: Use the Right Rule for the Right Format

Ebook covers are screen assets and should be prepared in RGB. Print covers move through a print workflow where CMYK is the relevant production space and spot colors are not accepted. Do not assume that a neon RGB color will reproduce identically in print after conversion.

If you use a design tool that works mainly in RGB, export according to KDP’s current print specifications and inspect the result with the designer or print workflow in mind. More important than the label on the working document is whether the final PDF meets KDP’s color, profile, font, transparency, and image requirements.

Cover Creator vs a Custom Cover

KDP Cover Creator can produce a technically valid cover using templates and is useful when budget or speed matters. A custom designer gives you more control over genre signaling, typography, hierarchy, image licensing, series branding, and differentiation. The commercial question is whether the cover earns the right click from the intended reader.

Use the cover design guide before commissioning a refresh. Technical compliance prevents rejection; market-fit design determines whether the cover competes effectively at thumbnail size.

Use the Cover Template Generator Every Time

Generate the KDP cover template from the exact trim size, page count, paper, and cover type for the edition you are preparing. Work directly over that template or give it to the designer. Recreate it if pagination changes.

Do not build a print wrap by guessing the spine or importing the ebook cover into the front panel and stretching a background around it. A full wrap is a manufacturing file and should be treated with the same precision as the interior PDF.

Common Reasons a Cover Needs Rework

Frequent problems include incorrect overall dimensions, low effective image resolution, missing embedded fonts, text outside safe areas, spine text on an ineligible or too-narrow spine, spot colors or problematic profiles, unflattened transparency, a barcode conflict, and metadata that does not match the setup fields. Most of these are easier to prevent with the current KDP template and a final preflight than to repair after rejection.

Use Print Previewer to investigate warnings, then inspect a proof copy before release when the book is commercially important. Fix the underlying source file and regenerate the PDF rather than repeatedly moving objects in an exported file.

When to Refresh a Live Cover

Consider a refresh when the design is materially off-genre, no longer competitive at thumbnail size, misrepresents the book, or is supported by evidence that shoppers see the listing but do not click. A refresh should have a hypothesis you can test, not just a new aesthetic preference.

KDP cover updates can take time to appear across retailer surfaces. Log the upload date and give the change time to propagate before judging it. Connect the decision with the backlist strategy rather than changing the cover in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details>

What size should a Kindle ebook cover be?

KDP currently recommends 2560 pixels high by 1600 pixels wide, with a 1.6:1 height-to-width ratio.

</details>
<details>

What resolution should print cover images be?

KDP’s current cover guidance uses 300 DPI/PPI as the production target for print image quality.

</details>
<details>

How many pages are needed for paperback spine text?

At least 79 pages.
