Most first-time users click around aimlessly before finding what they need. This walkthrough maps every section so you know exactly where to go for what. For the full publishing guide, see our complete beginner’s guide to self-publishing on Amazon KDP.

Bookshelf Tab

The Bookshelf is your default landing page when you log into KDP. Every title you have published or are working on appears here. Each title shows its current status, Draft, In Review, Live, or Suppressed, alongside the format (eBook, Paperback, Hardcover) and a set of action buttons. From the Bookshelf you can: create a new title, edit an existing title’s details, update files, change pricing, and view your book’s Amazon product page. The ellipsis menu (three dots) next to each title reveals additional options including unpublishing, enrolling in KDP Select, and accessing promotional tools. Status meanings to know:

Draft: You have started entering details but not yet submitted for review.

In Review: Submitted and currently being reviewed by Amazon. Expect 24-72 hours.

Live: Published and available on Amazon.

Suppressed: Amazon has identified an issue, usually a content policy violation or file problem, and removed your book from sale. You will receive an email with details.

Reports Tab

KDP Reports is now a much more useful operating view than the old “sales dashboard” model. The main Dashboard shows top-earning books, estimated royalties, orders, KENP reads, top formats and marketplaces, plus a 30-day trend line. Amazon says the Dashboard page itself refreshes every 15 minutes, but the underlying events arrive on different schedules.

eBook orders can take up to 24 hours after the order is placed. Print orders appear after the book ships, typically within 24 hours of shipment rather than when the customer first clicks Buy. KENP reading can take 24 to 48 hours to appear and is finalized later. Use the Orders, Month-to-Date, KENP, Prior Month’s Royalties, Royalties Estimator, Preorders, and Payments views for the question each report is designed to answer instead of treating one number as “real-time sales.”

That distinction matters when diagnosing a sudden change. A missing print order may simply be unshipped; a KU spike may still be processing; an estimated royalty is not the same thing as a payment statement. The dashboard is a reporting system with different event clocks, not a single live counter.

Community Tab

The Community tab provides access to the KDP Community forums, a discussion board where authors ask questions, share experiences, and occasionally vent frustrations about the platform. It is a useful resource for troubleshooting specific issues and getting real-world answers from authors who have encountered the same problems. The quality of advice varies significantly. Treat forum answers as starting points for your own research rather than definitive guidance, particularly on topics like keyword strategy or advertising where best practices shift regularly.

Marketing Tab

The Marketing area is the entry point for KDP-specific promotional tools. Depending on the title and marketplace, this can include KDP Select promotions, Amazon Ads setup, Author Central, and A+ Content. Amazon changes the presentation over time, so think in terms of the task rather than memorizing one button position.

For advertising, author campaigns are managed in the Amazon Ads console after you enter through the KDP marketing flow. Current author-facing ad options center on Sponsored Products and, for eligible authors with the required catalog, Sponsored Brands. For Select titles, Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals are scheduled from the KDP promotion workflow rather than from the ads console.

Account Settings

Your account area is operationally separate from book metadata. This is where the legal identity, tax profile, payment details, and security settings that support the entire KDP account live. The identity name must match the government-issued ID if Amazon asks you to verify; tax information should match your tax forms; and bank information should match the bank account holder.

KDP may take up to five business days to validate new bank details. Authors using a payment service provider also need to pay attention to the Payment Service Provider Program: from August 1, 2026, KDP stopped making payments to accounts using nonparticipating providers or participating providers whose required KYC was incomplete. These are account-level issues, not title-level settings.

Notifications and Alerts

KDP sends email notifications for significant events: book going live, book rejected or suppressed, KDP Select enrollment renewal approaching, and royalty payment processed. Check that your notification email address is current and that KDP emails are not going to spam, missing a suppression notice can leave your book offline for longer than necessary.

What to Check Regularly

A useful weekly routine is short. Check the Bookshelf for unexpected status changes, the Reports Dashboard for directional trends, Orders for processed units, and KENP if Select matters to the title. Review active promotions or ads in their own consoles, then inspect the Payments report monthly rather than expecting the sales dashboard to function as an accounting statement.

Use the dashboard to decide what deserves deeper work, then move to the right tool. For example, a visibility problem belongs in keyword and category research, a weak product page belongs in a listing audit, and a print-file warning belongs in the publishing workflow. The KDP dashboard is most useful when it tells you which question to ask next.

A decision-led way to use KDP Reports

Start with the business question. “Did orders fall?” belongs in Orders and Dashboard. “Did KU reading fall?” belongs in KENP. “What will I actually be paid?” belongs in Prior Month’s Royalties and Payments. “Did a promotion move units?” belongs in Promotions, while Amazon Ads has its own campaign reporting.

This prevents a common mistake: comparing numbers that are measured at different points in the transaction. eBook orders are recorded after payment processing, print orders after shipment, KENP on a reading timeline, and payments weeks later. A clean operating habit is to compare like with like over a consistent window.

Use the KDP dashboard by task: manage titles in Bookshelf, read current Reports correctly, find marketing tools, and keep account details accurate.

[31,32

post-11539","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-kdp-publishing","category-kdp-starting-out
["GET
